La Camarilla
Life and Sports with a Flavor of Arizona

You may play a great game of tennis in the Sea Garden – Varna, by the beautiful Bulgarian Black Sea.
You may play tennis along the Geneva Sea or in the foot hills of Fujiyama, it wouldn’t be bad if you tried tennis with a flavor of Arizona…

In March, throughout our northern states, the arctic winds carry across Canada the scent of the polar bears, while on the tennis courts of Arizona, the rapid fire of the tennis volley echoes under the green palm crowns.
I was on my way to the Kingdom of the bench presses - the fitness center of the famous tennis, racquetball and swimming club “La Camarilla” but I found I was mesmerized by the activity on the tennis courts.
I started staring at the frantic work of the trainers. They had created a system by which their partners, 15 or a little older than that boys and girls, were hitting the ball back and forth in double’s fashion with their coaches.
While partnering in learning, the masters were transferring their rich tennis repertory.
Together synchronized they were working as smooth as a Rolls Royce engine.
I felt sorry about the future competition of the coaches’ students. “We have 16 tennis courts, the manager Robert Forman told me. They are practically used 365 days a year.
Our club was established 21 years ago. We also have 7 racquetball courts, 2 fitness rooms for strength building, all furnished with modern equipment, a 25 meter Olympic pool with 6 lanes, rooms for aerobics and yoga classes, and volleyball quarters. During the vacations, we organize sport camps in which the children are surrounded with the care and the attention of our instructors and trainers. “La Camarilla” isn’t a gigantic club by its size.
Despite this its members number more than 500, and hundreds more are using the accommodations on certain days and special occasions. It is open from 5 A.M. to 10 P.M. – 17 hours a day. It is well staffed with very qualified trainers and instructors.
If one complains of a lack of energy, if one wants to recover after some kind of suffering or stress, if one wants to rejuvenate – there is no better place than this one! Here they have tons of specialized programs –for children on up to retirees. Membership is $49.00 a month, and $101 for the entire family.
In addition, elders have a 20% discount. Often the club organizes meetings with specialists in different areas, or with famous people. During holidays there are competitions in different sports. The best players participate in city, state and national levels, where they defend the honor of their schools, colleges or teams.
There are many specialists with high qualifications in “La Camarilla” such as the Bulgarian rowing Olympic champion Iskra Balchev, who has opened a massage salon there.
The club provides physical therapy by certified physical therapists to the public.
The club is an awardee of the Governor of Arizona for its quality of the staff and facilities, and it is recognized for its professionalism in sports and health achievements.
The club was established by George Johnson, a major investor, also known for building luxury homes, hotels, golf courses etc, always a much respected man, with a high reputation. He is always the leader and promoter of the club. The latest technology for sports or physical health is here, in this blessed place of Scottsdale, well known as the most luxurious suburb of Phoenix.
